Freiburg's crest is built around a griffin, a mythical creature that is half eagle and half lion. This season it appears on the chest, on the back of the neck and in the hologram on every shirt.
Sport-Club Freiburg was founded in 1904 in Freiburg im Breisgau, in Germany's south-west.
Christian Streich coached Freiburg for more than 12 years and turned them into a stable Bundesliga club that regularly qualified for Europe.
Freiburg moved into their new home, the Europa-Park Stadion.
Under Julian Schuster, Freiburg reached their first European final, losing 3–0 to Aston Villa.
What does the SC Freiburg logo mean?
The griffin stands for strength and watchfulness, and it has become the symbol of the club. Red and white are Freiburg's traditional colours. Fans sometimes call the team the "Breisgau-Brasilianer" (the Breisgau Brazilians), a nickname from the 1990s for their attractive, attacking football.
SC Freiburg kit history — red and white
Freiburg play in red and white, usually red at home, with white or black as change colours. Nike makes the 2026/27 kits. All three shirts are made from recycled polyester as part of Nike's "Move to Zero" programme and share the griffin hologram on the hem.
