Ajax logo history — the Greek hero in 11 lines
Ajax is named after a hero from Greek mythology, and his head has been on the club's badge for almost a century.
AFC Ajax was founded in Amsterdam on 18 March 1900. The club took its name from Ajax, the Greek warrior famous in Homer's Iliad for his strength and courage.
The club adopted a crest showing a detailed portrait of the warrior Ajax. Different versions of that portrait were used for the next six decades.
Ajax introduced the stylised crest still used today: the hero's head drawn with just 11 lines, one for each player in a team. The simple design works well on shirts and screens, including in DLS.
This season, the men's and women's teams each wear their own championship stars, with one star for every 10 league titles.
What does the Ajax logo mean?
The crest shows the head of Ajax, the Greek hero, which gives the team the nickname De Godenzonen, "the Sons of the Gods". The 11 lines that draw his face stand for the 11 players on the pitch. The red and white match the colours of the club's famous shirt.
Ajax kit history — the broad red stripe
The white shirt with a broad red stripe down the middle is one of the most recognisable designs in football. It's the shirt Johan Cruyff wore when Ajax won three European Cups in a row from 1971 to 1973, and the one Louis van Gaal's young side wore when they won the Champions League in 1995.
adidas has made Ajax's kits for many years. The 2026/27 collection mixes tradition and history: the classic home shirt, an away kit printed with the club's greatest triumphs, and a light blue third kit that brings back the 1980s.

Ajax in DLS 2026 — four-time European champions
Ajax have won 36 Dutch league titles and four European Cups: three in a row from 1971 to 1973, and the 1995 Champions League.
Ajax are famous for their youth academy, De Toekomst, which has produced players such as Johan Cruyff, Marco van Basten, Dennis Bergkamp, Frank de Boer, Clarence Seedorf, Wesley Sneijder, Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt. That makes Ajax a natural choice for DLS players who like building a team around young talent. Their most recent league title came in 2021/22, and PSV won the next two.
