PSV logo history — from a light bulb to two stars
PSV was founded as the sports club of the Philips electronics company, and its first crest showed a light bulb.
PSV was founded on 31 August 1913 as Philips Sport Vereniging, a sports club for Philips employees in Eindhoven. The football department took the name PSV in 1916.
The club's first crest showed a light bulb and the words "Philips Sport" in a circle. It's one reason PSV are still nicknamed the Lampen, the Light Bulbs.
PSV's third crest design is still used today: an oval with red and white horizontal lines and a flag carrying the letters PSV.
Two stars were added above the crest to mark 20 league titles. PSV have since reached 27, most recently in 2025/26.
What does the PSV logo mean?
"PSV" stands for Philips Sport Vereniging, Philips Sports Club. The red and white stripes repeat the club's colours, which were chosen at the founding meeting in 1913. The chairman, Jan Willem Hofkes, reportedly liked the contrast between a red raspberry drink and a white notepad. The two stars celebrate 20 league titles. Fans proudly call themselves the Boeren, the Farmers, as a nod to their roots in the Brabant region.
PSV kit history — red and white since 1913
PSV have played in red and white since 1913, usually in stripes. The red-and-white striped shirt is the one PSV wore when they won the European Cup in 1988 under Guus Hiddink, as part of a treble.
Puma has made PSV's kits since the 2020/21 season, taking over from Umbro, and the deal has been extended until 2030. As part of that extension, PSV promised fans a design competition, and the 2026/27 third kit is the result.
