VfL Wolfsburg logo history — the castle returns
Wolfsburg's new crest is really an old one. Fans campaigned for more than two decades to bring it back.
VfL Wolfsburg was founded in 1945 in the city built around the Volkswagen factory. The club's name and its nickname, Die Wölfe (the Wolves), come from the city.
For decades, Wolfsburg's badge was the "Zinnenwappen", a crest whose "W" is shaped like a castle with battlements, a nod to Wolfsburg Castle, which gave the city its name.
In 2002, the club switched to a round logo. It was used for 24 years, including during the 2009 Bundesliga title and the 2015 DFB-Pokal win, but many fans never stopped wanting the castle crest back.
Hours before a Bundesliga match against Bayern Munich, Wolfsburg brought back a modernised Zinnenwappen with immediate effect. Club officials, fans and the city all took part in the decision, and a fan representative called it a historic and incredibly emotional moment. It's the crest on this page.
What does the VfL Wolfsburg logo mean?
The castle-shaped "W" stands for Wolfsburg and its castle, the building that gave the city its name. Bringing it back reconnects the club with its city and with the factory workers who have supported it since 1945. The club's green and white remain its signature colours.
VfL Wolfsburg kit history — green and white
Wolfsburg play in green, usually with white, and Volkswagen has long been the shirt sponsor, reflecting the club's close ties with the company. Nike makes the kits. The 2026/27 collection is the first to carry the returning castle crest.

VfL Wolfsburg in DLS 2026 — the comeback project
Wolfsburg won the Bundesliga in 2008/09 and the DFB-Pokal in 2015. After finishing 16th in 2025/26 and losing the relegation play-off to Paderborn, they play in the 2. Bundesliga in 2026/27.
The relegation play-off against SC Paderborn finished 0–0 in Wolfsburg, and Paderborn won the second leg 2–1 after extra time. Dieter Hecking, who arrived in March 2026, could not keep the team up. In DLS, Wolfsburg make a great comeback project: take the Wolves from the second division back to the top.
