The away shirt is a tribute to the Canuts, the silk weavers who made Lyon famous. It's red with tonal vertical stripes and maroon on the collar and shoulders. Lyon logo history — the lion of Lyon
The lion on OL's crest comes straight from the coat of arms of the city of Lyon.
Olympique Lyonnais was founded in 1950, though its roots go back to 1899. The first crest was based on the city's coat of arms, with "OL" in the blue top section and the city's white lion on red below.
Over the decades, the lion was redrawn many times. Some versions added a football or a key, and the red and blue kept changing shade.
OL adopted a shield with the lion and the "OL" initials. It became the badge of the club's golden era.
The crest was cleaned up, with brighter red and blue and more room for the lion. That's the version on this page.
What does the Lyon logo mean?
The lion is the symbol of the city of Lyon and appears on its coat of arms, and "OL" stands for Olympique Lyonnais. The red and blue come from the city's colours too, which is why fans see the crest as a symbol of the city as much as of the club. Lyon fans and players are known as Les Gones, a local word for "the kids".
Lyon kit history — white, red and blue
Lyon's home colours are white, red and blue, with white the main colour. adidas has made OL's kits for years, and for 2026/27 each of the three shirts takes inspiration from a different part of the city's culture: football heritage, the silk trade and funk music.
